 There are some questions in English that present difficuties as regards meaning. In this lesson we will take a close look at this pair: what does she /he look like?  and  what is he or she like?    Hay ciertas preguntas en inglés que suelen presentar dificultades en cuanto a su significado. En esta lección haremos hincapié en el siguiente par: ¿cómo es su apariencia? y ¿cómo es?

Ya conoces la estructura what....like? ¡Repásala!

 

What does she look like? generally refers to the physical characteristics of the person we want to describe: that person may be beautiful, she may have long hair, be slim, tall etc. ¿Como es su apariencia? en general refiere a los rasgos físicos de la persona que queremos describir: esa persona puede ser hermosa, puede tener pelo largo, ser delgada/o, alta /o etc.

 

 

What does Peter look like?  'Oh, he is very tall and slim.'

 

-¿Como es la apariencia de Pedro? 'Ah, es muy alto y delgado.'
What does you granny look like? 'She doen't look old.'   -¿Como es tu abuelita en apariencia? -No aparenta ser vieja.

Does the daughter look like the mother? 'They look the same.'

  

                 -¿Se le parece la hija a la madre? -Son iguales

What does the twins look like? 'They are human like.'

-¿Como son los gemelos en su apariencia? -Parecen humanos.

                                                                                                              

 

 

 

Now let's take a look at the second question: what is she like?  This question can still refer to the physical characteristics of a person but generally it focuses on   personality traits and character : a person can be friendly, shy and or industrious. Ahora veamos un poco la segunda pregunta: ¿Cómo es? Esta pregunta puede seguir refiriéndose a las características físicas de la persona, pero en general enfatiza en los rasgos de personalidad y en el carácter  una persona puede ser amigable, vergonzosa y o emprendedora.

 

 

What is the new secretary like? 'Oh she is very kind and efficient.'

 

-¿Como es la nueva secretaria? -Es muy amable y eficiente.
What is the newcomer like? 'He is charming, he is musing.'   -¿Como es el recién llegado?  -Es encantador, es divertido.

 What is your best friend like? ' Strange, stingy and moody.'

  

            -¿Como es tu mejor amigo? -Extraño, tacaño y de mal humor.

What are the newly-born brothers like? 'Quiet.'

-¿Como son los hermanos recién nacidos? -Callados.

 

 

 

 

NOTE: Do not confuse both the above questions with 'How is she /he etc? In this way you are only asking for someone's health. NOTA: No confundas las preguntas de más arriba con la pregunta How is ...? ¿Como está? De esta forma sólo estarás preguntando por la salud de alguien.

 

How are you? 'I am very well, thanks...'

 

-¿Como estás? -Estoy muy bien, gracias...
How is you mother? 'Oh, she is not so well nowadays.'   -¿Como está tu mamá? -Ah, ella no está muy bien estos días.
