| ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SENTENCES: In English sentences can be active or passive (both in spoken and written language). | ORACIONES ACTIVAS Y PASIVAS: En inglés las oraciones pueden ser activas o pasivas (ambas en lenguaje hablado o escrito). |
| If the sentence is active the subject of that sentence acts on something or someone: it performs the action expressed by the main verb. The subject acts. |

Si la oración es activa, el sujeto de la misma actúa sobre algo o alguien: realiza la acción expresada por el verbo principal de la oración. El sujeto de la oración actúa. |

| My grand-father built this house in 1889. | Mi abuelo construyó esta casa en 1889. | |
| The dog bit the child in the right arm. | El perro mordió al niño en el brazo derecho. | |
| The strong wind blew our little tent away. | El fuerte viento hizo volar nuestra pequeña carpa. |
 Now if the sentence is a
passive
one, the subject of that sentence
is acted upon: the subject receives the action expressed in the main verb.

Ahora si se trata de una oración pasiva algo o alguien actúa sobre el sujeto de la misma: el sujeto de la oración recibe la acción expresada en el verbo principal. |

| As you can read in the examples above if you want to point out who did an action or what caused it you have to use the preposition BY |

| In English, we generally use the passive voice when it is not that important who or what caused the action. |

En inglés, en general utilizamos la voz pasiva cuando no es tan importante quien o que es el causante de la acción. |
| Writers should prefer the use of the active voice rather than the passive one. Why is this?...Because the active voice is considered to be a more powerful and straightforward form of expression.The active voice also uses less words to convey the same message | Los escritores prefieren utilizar la voz activa en vez de la pasiva. ¿Por que es esto así?....Es debido a que se considera a la voz activa una forma de expresión más poderosa y directa. | PASSIVE: This room is cleaned every day by Peter. | PASIVA: Esta habitación es aseada cada día por Pedro. |
