Reported speech in questions 2       Preguntas en estilo indirecto 2

 

  In this lesson we wil try to explain how to report questions that does not begin with a question word (what, where, who) etc, that is to say, how to report yes no question.  

 

 En esta lección trataremos de explicarte como utilizar estilo indirecto en las preguntas que no comienzan con una palabra wh (que, cuando, quien) etc.  es decir, como pasar a estilo indirecto las preguntas de tipo yes /no.

 

Take a look at these examples below:     Observa los ejemplos de más abajo:

 

 

Is she all right? ¿Está ella bien?
He asked me if she was all right Me preguntó si ella estaba bien.

Does she like dancing?

 ¿Le gusta bailar?

He asked me if she liked dancing Me preguntó si le gustaba bailar.
Did she arrive on time? ¿Llegó a tiempo?
He asked me if he had arrived on time Me preguntó si llegó a tiempo.
Has she got a sister? ¿Tiene una hermana?
He asked me if she had a sister Me preguntó si tenía una hermana.
Can she cook? Puede cocinar.

He asked me if she could cook

Me preguntó si sabía cocinar.

 

 

If there is no question word (what /when/ where etc) use if or whether in reported speech questions.

Si no se trata de una pregunta del tipo wh (que tenga what /when /where etc) utiliza if o whether (si...)cuando pases las preguntas a estilo indirecto.

 

 

REMEMBER THAT  when you change a sentence from direct speech into indirect speech, the main verb goes back a tense into the past... RECUERDA QUE cuando pasas una oración del estilo directo a estilo indirecto,  el verbo principal retrocede un tiempo verbal...

can could poder(podía)

am playing / is playing was playing etc estoy jugandoestaba jugando

LEARN THIS: You can say...he asked me (if / whether)  ....he inquiered (if / whether) or he wanted to know (if /whether)... APRÉNDETE ESTO: Puedes decir...el me preguntó (si)....me dijo (si)...o quiso saber (si).....

 

 

 

 

 

Now imagine that someone is asking you questions and you later report these question s to someone else. You have to complete the missing verbs.
 

Ahora imagina que alguien te hace preguntas y que más tarde le cuentas a otra persona de las preguntas que te hicieron ...Deberás completar los verbos que faltan.

  Were you at home last Friday? He asked me if I had at home last Friday .              (be)

   Has she got a driving licence? He wanted to know if she a driving licence.

  Do you still smoke?      He asked me if I still  .

   Can you lend me fifty pesos? He wanted to know if I lend him fifty pesos.

  Is Ann coming to the meeting? He inquired  if Ann  coming to the meeting.

  Will you be there on time? He asked me if I  be there on time.
