Shoud     Deber / deberías / tendrías

 

  SHOULD is another modal auxiliary verb like can, could, must and would.  Soon we will provide a compilation of functions and meaning of the modal auxiliaries. For the time being, lest's focus on SHOULD     SHOULD es otro verbo modal tal como lo son can, could, must and would. He should work harder. Tendrías que trabajar con más ahínco. 

We shouldn't arrive late No tendríamos que llegar tarde.

Should I go to the party? ¿Tendría que ir a la fiesta?
You shoud smoke less. Tendrías que fumar menos.
 

 

SHOULD is very often used to give advice...You should (go) there  means that it would be a good idea or the right thing to do...  SHOULD se utiliza a menudo para dar consejos...Tu deberías (ir) allí  significa que ir allí sería una buena idea o la acción correcta a realizar...

 

The meaning of SHOULD is not as strong as must....    El significado de SHOULD no es tan fuerte como el de must...

 

 

You must stop drinking....(means it is neccesary that you stop)

 

Debes dejar de beber. (significa que es necesario que no lo hagas)
You should stop drinking...(means it would be a good idea to stop)   Tendrías que dejar de beber. (sería una buena idea que dejaras de hacerlo)

 

STRUCTURE of Should ESTRUCTURA de Should

 

We use SHOULD + the infinitive without to.

 

Se usa should + el infinitivo sin to.

NOTICE that should is invariable for all persons (singular or plural)

NEGATIVE SENTENCES: Use should not or shouldn't is invariable too. ORACIONES NEGATIVAS: Utiliza should not o shouldn't es también invariable

-¿Tengo que invitar a Tomás a la fiesta? -Pienso que tendrías.
¿Should we go to the hospital tomorrow? 'I believe we should.'   -¿Tenemos que ir al hospital mañana? -Creo que tendríamos.

     

Sometimes we use phrases such as I think...I don't think...Do you think...? together with SHOULD when we ask for or when we give an opinion about something. Aveces utilizamos frases como 'pienso que...', 'no pienso que..', '¿Crees que...? juntamente con SHOULD cuando pedimos o damos una opinión acerca de algo.

 

I think the government should do something with the economy...

 

Creo que el gobierno tendría que hacer algo con la economía.
I don't think you should eat so much at night   Creo que no tendrías que comer tanto a la noche.
Do you think I should take that job?   ¿Piensas que tendría que tomar el trabajo?

 Paul smokes a lot, so you advice to him 'Paul, you  less.'

  Your friend drives without a seat belt. Give him advice about it. 'You  without a seat belt. It is dangerous.'

 Max is going to visit England next month. Advice him to practice a bit of English. 'You your English a bit.'
